Akshay Kumar’s Rowdy Rathore sequel update leaves fans shocked
Akshay Kumar’s upcoming action movie has been in the works for three years
Akshay Kumar’s cop drama Rowdy Rathore, released in 2012, was one of the highest-grossing Indian films, earning Rs. 203 crores worldwide at the box office.
The 57-year-old actor portrayed a dual role of a brave police officer and a thief, while Sonakshi Sinha featured in the female lead role.
The storyline, especially Akshay’s famous dialogue “Don’t angry me!”, still resonates in fans’ hearts.
Many were eagerly waiting for its sequel, but here’s an update that might disappoint them.
According to media reports, after three years of persistent but futile efforts to develop the project, producers Shabinaa Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali have scrapped it.
Reportedly, Disney India, which holds the intellectual property rights to the original Rowdy Rathore along with Bhansali, is hesitant to proceed with the sequel.
But there’s also some good news. The script is now undergoing significant revisions to be reworked into a standalone commercial film.
It was originally written by V. Vijayendra Prasad, the writer behind blockbuster hits like Baahubali and RRR.
Sources suggest that renowned Tamil filmmaker P.S. Mithran has been signed on to direct, with the film expected to go on floors in early 2026.
The makers had considered Sidharth Malhotra for the lead role in the sequel, but they are now actively seeking a younger, bankable star to play a hard-hitting, larger-than-life police officer.
For the unversed, directed by Prabhu Deva, Rowdy Rathore was a Hindi remake of the 2006 Telugu hit Vikramarkudu.
