Hollywood horror stuns India with massive first-day box office
Beats action blockbuster and regional drama to claim opening crown
It's important enough for a horror movie to outperform a major action movie at the box office.
It becomes an even greater accomplishment when you consider that the action movie stars one of Bollywood's biggest young stars and that the horror movie is from Hollywood.
However, The Conjuring: Last Rites has achieved just that at the Indian box office. With a huge ₹18-crore opening, the movie has outperformed this week's new Hindi releases, The Bengal Files and Baaghi 4.
The Conjuring: Last Rites had one of the best opening days for a horror movie in India this Friday, with an estimated ₹18 crore net at the box office.
With its collection, the movie was able to surpass not only other Hollywood horror films but also a few horror films from the Desi genre.
The Conjuring series' last installment is anticipated to bring in a sizable sum of money abroad as well.
The Hollywood Reporter claims that Last Rites is preparing for a $65 million opening weekend in North America after earning $8.5 million from previews alone.
The movie is predicted to gross over $100 million on its first weekend worldwide. This might include at least $7 million from India alone.
