Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai has received relief from the Delhi High Court on her plea to protect her personality rights.

The 51-year-old actress had filed a petition before the court against the misuse of her name and photographs by various online platforms, including websites and social media pages.

The hearing of her plea commenced on Thursday, during which the court issued an order in her favour.

According to media reports, the court observed that the unauthorised use of personal attributes of an individual violates the right to privacy.

The bench, consisting of Justice Tejas Karia, restrained several people and companies from misusing the actress’s personal details, including her name and photos, particularly through technologies like Artificial Intelligence.

Justice Karia remarked, “Personality rights can be located in an individual’s autonomy to permit or deny the exploitation of the likeness or other attributes of their personality.”

The court further added, “In other words, the unauthorised exploitation of the attributes of an individual's personality may have two facets – first, violation of their right to protect their personality attributes from being commercially exploited; and second, violation of their right to privacy, which in turn leads to undermining their right to live with dignity.”

Aishwarya is not the first actor to seek legal protection of her personality rights. Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, and several others have also approached the courts in the past to safeguard their identities from misuse.
