MNS issues warning to ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ over use of ‘Bombay’
A video from Kapil Sharma’s show featuring Huma Qureshi sparked outrage after she mentioned “Bombay,” prompting MNS to caution the makers to respect Mumbai’s official name
Mumbai (Maharashtra) in India, 12 September ( Indian News Agency ): The celebrity guests on Kapil Sharma's comedy show, "The Great Indian Kapil Show," have been warned by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) for referring to Mumbai as "Bombay."
Ameya Khopkar, the leader of the MNS's film wing, took to his X handle to warn Kapil Sharma's show about airing episodes where a famous guest was seen calling the state of Mumbai "Bombay."
Khopkar claimed that the term "Bombay" is still commonly used by anchors, Rajya Sabha MPs from Delhi, Kapil Sharma's show guests and a number of Hindi films.
Why MNS Issued Warning to Kapil Sharma’s Show
The MNS leader issued a "request-cum-warning" to adhere to the modified nomenclature and use the term "Mumbai" in their shows, recalling the Maharashtra government's 1995 official recognition of the term for the state.
He wrote, "Even though 30 years have passed since Bombay was officially renamed Mumbai, the term Bombay is still frequently used in Bollywood's Kapil Sharma Show celebrity guests, Delhi-based Rajya Sabha MPs, show anchors, and in many Hindi films. It was officially recognised by the Maharashtra Government in 1995 and by the Central Government in 1996, even before Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata. Therefore, a humble request-cum-warning is being issued to respect this and use the name Mumbai."
The Viral Clip of Huma Qureshi
He shared the video of one of the episodes from The Great Indian Kapil Show in which Huma Qureshi was seen speaking about how her brother Saqib Saleem has always been supportive of her after they faced challenges in 'Bombay' as outsiders.
