Aamir Khan, opened up about his biggest weakness and recalled how his debut production Lagaan (2001) became a trendsetter in Bollywood.

During a candid conversation with Komal Nahta, when asked about his weakness, the 60-year-old admitted, “I am not able to work according to a budget. We had hoped Lagaan would be made in Rs. 12 crores, but its budget ended up being Rs. 25 crores (laughs)!”

He shared a lighthearted anecdote from the shoot, revealing how director Ashutosh Gowariker demanded 800–1000 extras instead of the 200 initially arranged, as the wide frame made fewer people look sparse.

“Reena (Dutta) and Rao sahab (Shamala S. Rao) were upset that I always sided with Ashu. But he was right,” Aamir recalled, adding that instead of wasting the day, he suggested playing cricket until things were sorted.

Beyond budget challenges, Aamir highlighted how Lagaan introduced several groundbreaking practices.

The Ghajini actor said, “I decided to work the way I always wanted to. I brought in the first AD system, introduced walkie-talkies for communication, and ensured the film was shot in one schedule.”

He also insisted on using sync sound, rare in mainstream cinema at the time, to preserve the authenticity of actors’ performances.

Aamir further revealed that Lagaan was also the first film to have a formal security setup. He brought in Ronit Roy to manage the set’s safety, deploying 150 guards to protect the equipment and crew.

Summing up, the  Pk star said, “Security, communication systems, the first AD setup, sync sound, and one-schedule shooting all started with Lagaan. Today, they are industry norms.”

On the work front, Aamir Khan was last seen in Sitaare Zameen Par, and now he is gearing up for EK Din, which features his son Junaid Khan alongside Sai Pallavi.
