Pakistani actor Fawad Khan and Bollywood star Vaani Kapoor’s romantic drama Aabeer Gulaal has finally made its worldwide debut, excluding India, after delays caused by the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.

Directed by Aarti S. Bagdi, the film premiered globally on September 12 but has since opened to mixed-to-poor reviews.

Critics argue that the film fails to do justice to its leads.

BBC Asian Network’s Haroon Rashid called it “one of the most frustrating romantic dramas” he has seen in years, criticizing its “cheap look,” “incoherent storyline,” and lack of attention to post-production details.

He noted that, while Fawad and Vaani brought their natural charm, the film itself was the problem.

Gulf News described the film as “bloated,” weighed down by unnecessary diversions, and singled out Lisa Haydon’s cameo as a needless addition.

Khaleej Times observed that Aabeer Gulaal leans heavily on Bollywood nostalgia, referencing classics like DDLJ and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, but dismissed it as overdone and cliché.

USA Pillar similarly faulted the movie’s pacing, saying indulgent subplots and cameos distracted from the main story.

However, Bollywood Hungama offered a rare positive note, by labeling it “a breezy family entertainer” for audiences seeking lighthearted, feel-good cinema with a desi touch.

Produced by Indian Stories Production, A Richer Lens, and Aarjay Pictures, the London shot film also stars Riddhi Dogra, Farida Jalal, Soni Razdan, and Parmeet Sethi.

Despite its strong cast, Aabeer Gulaal appears to have struggled to strike a chord with reviewers worldwide.
