When Shah Rukh Khan lost an ad to Aamir Khan despite lower fees

Ad filmmaker Prahlad Kakkar recalled choosing Aamir Khan for a commercial featuring Aishwarya Rai and Mahima Chaudhry

When Shah Rukh Khan lost an ad to Aamir Khan despite lower fees

Shah Rukh Khan's early career has been shared by seasoned adman Prahlad Kakkar. He remembered how the famous person once quoted ₹6 lakh for a project involving advertisements, but Aamir Khan ultimately secured the role for a significantly higher sum of ₹17 lakh.

Aishwarya Rai and Mahima Chaudhry were also featured in the advertisement. Shah Rukh's relatively low demand, according to Kakkar, was related to his wish to purchase Mannat, his now-iconic home. In an interview, Kakkar revealed, "He said, 'I am short of ₹6 lakh, you give me, and I will do the ad.'"

The makers chose Aamir despite SRK's offer. Kakkar claims that image played a bigger role in the decision than price. Because of his success with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Aamir had the reputation of the "innocent boy next door" at the time. The image's relatability and cleanliness made it ideal for the campaign.

Meanwhile, Shah Rukh continued to develop his on screen persona. He had not yet established himself as the archetypal clean cut hero thanks to his roles in films like Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman. In the end, this misalignment in brand image cost him the project.

However, Kakkar commended Shah Rukh's professionalism, pointing out that he was consistently dedicated and diligent on sets. The story illustrates how casting decisions in Bollywood frequently depend on how an actor's public persona fits with a brand's mission in addition to star power and financial negotiations.
