Bollywood designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla have revealed fresh details about the impromptu 1991 wedding between Amrita Singh and Saif Ali Khan — including that Singh’s name was reportedly changed to “Aziza” during the nikaah ceremony.

In a recent interview, the designers, who acted as witnesses at the couple’s secretive wedding, described how the ceremony was organized on short notice.

According to the Indian Express, they recalled that a maulvi and a Sikh priest officiated, and at one point the officiant asked Singh to choose a name beginning with A, resulting in “Aziza.”

Moreover, Abu Jani and Khosla also recounted the emotional backstory: Singh was reportedly hesitant about the marriage, while Khan was determined to formalize their union. 

They said the wedding was kept hidden from both families, contributing to the drama that followed.

Additionally, the designers further recalled that Singh was prepped hurriedly for the ceremony, donning whatever she could in the rush, while Khan wore a traditional bandhgala.

Later, tensions surfaced with Saif’s mother, Sharmila Tagore, who was reportedly unaware of the wedding until after it had taken place and responded emotionally.

Furthermore, Khan and Singh went on to divorce in 2004 after a high-profile separation, with both parties voicing disputes and financial allegations publicly in the years after.
