Cricket fans all over India woke up to a shocking piece of news when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named Shubman Gill the new captain of ODIs, replacing Rohit Sharma before the India vs. Australia 2025 series.

Rohit, the captain who took India to successive ICC titles, the 2024 T20 World Cup, and the 2025 Champion Trophy, has been removed from his captaincy, sparking a massive storm on social media. 

 Fans call It “Injustice” to a legend:

Moments after the announcement, #RohitSharma began trending on X (formerly Twitter), with thousands of fans expressing disappointment and anger over BCCI’s move.

One user wrote, “Let’s see how many ICC trophies the Indian team wins after doing injustice to Rohit Sharma.” 

Another added, “Made Mumbai Indians five-time champions, gave India two ICC titles in nine months, and this is the reward? Rohit Sharma deserved better.” 

The Frustration didn’t stop there. More fans lashed out:

One user wrote, “Stop the drama. Agarkar & Gambhir don’t care for them. They want to boss the team and disregard their contributions completely.” 

Possible reason behind the move:

While BCCI has not issued an official explanation, as per Indian media sources, selectors and head coach Gautam Gambhir are looking to make a younger leadership core with Shubman Gill for long-term planning. 

At 38 years old, Rohit might not feature in the 2027 World Cup, and fixing Gill beforehand could ensure a smooth leadership handover. Still, many feel this move disrespects Rohit’s unmatched contributions.
