The first supermoon of 2025 is set to light up the sky on October 7, and millions around the world will be able to see this spectacular lunar event.

A supermoon happens when the moon comes closest to Earth in its orbit, making it look bigger and brighter than usual, about 14% larger and almost 30% brighter than a normal full moon.

It will be visible in the Indian subcontinent on the evening of October 6 and the early hours of October 7. The moon will rise at 5:27 PM IST on October 6 and reach its full phase at 9:16 AM IST on October 7.

This supermoon is also called the Harvest Moon as it comes closest to the autumn equinox. 

It got its name because, in the past, its bright light helped farmers work late at night during the harvest season.

Usually, the Harvest Moon appears in September, but this time, due to a slight shift in the moon’s orbit, it has moved to October.

People in the Northern Hemisphere, including India, North America, and Europe, will get the best view.

This October supermoon is special because it is the first of three in a row for 2025, which is quite rare. The next two supermoons will appear on November 5 and December 5.
