Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam’s upcoming film Haq, which is based on a controversial maintenance lawsuit in India, got into legal trouble before its release.

This film revolves around the story of Shah Bano Begum, a Muslim woman who, after getting a divorce, filed a criminal suit in the Supreme Court of India and won the right to alimony from her ex-husband.

The film’s teaser, released a week ago, has faced criticism for portraying Islamic Sharia law in a negative light.

Now, the legal heirs of Shah Bano Begum have approached the Indore High Court, seeking an immediate stay on the release of the film.

The family, in their petition, has alleged that Haq offends the sentiments of the Muslim community and portrays Sharia law in a derogatory and misogynistic manner.

They also accused filmmakers of not obtaining any legal authorisation or consent from Shah Bano Begum’s heirs to depict her life or story.

Plaintiffs filed the petition through advocate Tousif Warsi, while the filmmakers are being represented by Hitesh Jain of Parinam Law and Ameet Naik of Naik & Naik. The Indore High Court is expected to take up the matter for hearing soon.

Earlier, India Today reported that Shah Bano’s legal heirs had sent a notice to the film’s makers, asking them to stop the release.

The notice claimed the producers showed parts of Shah Bano’s personal life without permission, calling it defamation and a violation of her rights.

Haq features Yami Gautam Dhar and Emraan Hashmi in lead roles. The film is slated to release on November 7.
