Grizzlies star guard Ja Morant was tight-lipped about the internal friction that led to his recent one-game suspension, offering little clarity in his first post-game media session after returning to the court.

Morant scored 18 points and dished out 10 assists on Monday night but the Memphis Grizzlies still fell to the Detroit Pistons, 114-106. The team had suspended him for Sunday’s game against the Raptors, citing “conduct detrimental to the team.”

This disciplinary action stemmed from a heated exchange with head coach Tuomas Iisalo following a loss to the Lakers on Friday.

When pressed by reporters about his relationship with the coaching staff and whether the differences were settled, Morant repeatedly deflected, often referring to the team’s official statement.

When a reporter asked if he and the coach had settled their difference, Morant replied:

“Y’all asked that question of them, huh? So, y’all know the answer to that.”

When reporters tried to verify if he had agreed to move on with the team, he stated:

“Obviously, they can’t go and tell y’all something I ain’t said.”

However, when questioned directly about his relationship with the team, he offered a brief positive: “If I didn’t have a good relationship with (them), I wouldn’t talk to them at all.”

Morant’s suspension came after he appeared disengaged in the loss to the Lakers, where he scored a season-low eight points.

The tensions surrounding the 25-year-old guard continue to be a dominant storyline as the Grizzlies work to find their momentum early in the season.
