Zohran Mamdani created history by stunning victory in New York’s mayoral race, which redrawn the city’s political map, signaling a hunger for a new kind of leadership.

Born in Uganda, Zohran is the son of acclaimed historian Mahmood Mamdani and celebrated filmmaker Mira Nair, known for directing “Salaam Bombay!" and “Monsoon Wedding."

The 34-year-old state assemblyman’s rise from grassroots organising to the city’s highest office marks a striking shift in tone and priorities.

With 90 percent of votes counted, Mamdani led former governor Andrew Cuomo by nine points, 1,033,471 to 852,032, while Republican Curtis Sliwa trailed far behind.

Mamdani, who became the first Muslim, the first South Asian, and the first African-born mayor of the city, built his campaign around economic justice and housing affordability rather than identity politics.

His supporters say his win is less about who he is and more about what he stands for,a promise to make one of the world’s most expensive cities livable again.

Apart from his campaign promises, Zohran gained immense popularity through his unconventional approach to reaching out to the public during his election campaign.

“Tonight, against all odds, we have grasped it. The future is in our hands, my friends, we have toppled a political dynasty.” Mamdani told a roaring crowd after win.

The lawmaker from Queens will be the 111th mayor of New York, and the youngest mayor of the city in more than a century.
