Why Huma Qureshi took on a dark role in ‘Delhi Crime S3’ — It was pitched as ‘Batman vs Joker’
Huma Qureshi plays Meena, a ruthless human trafficking kingpin, marking a first for the actress in portraying a character this dark in the acclaimed Netflix series
Huma Qureshi discusses her role as a human trafficking kingpin in Delhi Crime S3 and why it's similar to the Joker from DC.
This month will see the release of the third season of Delhi Crime on Netflix. In the show's trailer which was released on Tuesday, Huma played Meena the strong antagonist of this season.
In an interview, she explains why she agreed to the role calling it exciting and dark.
In his nearly ten-and-a-half-year career she has never played a role so harmful.
She remembers receiving an offer for the position, “When Tanuj (Chopra) and Apoorva (Bakshi, the showrunners) approached me I said yes immediately because I am a big fan of the franchise. I asked her, ‘Am I playing a cop?’ And she said no. I thought that because I played Rani Bharti (in Maharani) those kinds of righteous characters would come my way. But as an actor I was excited because I had not done such a dark character.”
For the first time, Delhi Crime gives the antagonist nearly the same level of authority and power as the main character Shefali Shah's character DCP (now DIG) Vartika Chaturvedi.
According to Huma, the creators purposefully intended for the season to be a face off between the two.
“The way this was pitched to me was ‘this is Batman vs Joker’. And of course, every actor wants to be Batman, and which actor would not want to be Joker? So, we can’t say no to this proposition,” she says with a laugh.
Huma hopes the audience will be affected in the right way because she is aware that the role will make an impression.
“I want to be loved as the most hated woman in this show, because she does some really horrible things, which I don’t approve of or stand for as an individual,” says the actor.
