Filmmaker Kiran Rao has turned a sudden health scare into a moment of quiet reflection, sharing a candid update after undergoing surgery for her appendix.

In a series of Instagram posts from Mumbai’s Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, she offered followers a glimpse into her recovery.

The photos were ordinary and personal: a short video from her hospital room, a pouty selfie, her hospital name tag reading “Kiran Aamir Rao Khan”, and a final image of her smiling over a meal on a hospital couch.

The 52-year-old  revealed that her plans to “party” into the new year were interrupted by what she described as a “12 mm diameter appendix”.

In her trademark humour, she marvelled at modern medicine, admitting she still could not understand how it was removed through a catheter smaller than the appendix itself.

The filmmaker’s post was less about illness and more about gratitude.

She thanked her doctors, hospital staff, friends and family, joking that many visitors came mainly to laugh at her swollen lips, caused by an allergic reaction. “Sadly they’re back to normal and unglam now,” she wrote.

She confirmed she has since been discharged and is back home, planning to ease herself into 2026. Looking back, she said 2025 had been kind to her family, adding a hopeful wish for the coming year to be “kind, fun, full of love – and better AQI – for all”.

The post drew warm reactions from across the film industry. Karan Johar wrote, “Godspeed K,” while Zoya Akhtar wished her a speedy recovery.

Kiran Rao, who began her career assisting on Lagaan and later directed Dhobi Ghat, was last in the spotlight when Laapataa Ladies was chosen as India’s Oscars entry in 2024.
