Gwyneth Paltrow shares darkest moment after father’s death
The ‘Marty Supreme’ actress opens up about anxiety scare after father’s death
Gwyneth Paltrow recently revisited a harrowing incident that left her completely petrified in the aftermath of her father’s death.
In a conversation on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, the 53-year-old actress recalled an anxiety-inducing moment when she woke up in terror, believing she was having a heart attack.
The frightening episode occurred while Paltrow was deeply grieving the death of her father, Bruce Paltrow, in 2002.
Recalling that painful period, she shared that she felt like she was "going to die of grief."
"There was one night where I woke up and I thought I was having a heart attack in London," the Marty Supreme actress explained. "And the only reason I didn't call an ambulance was 'cause I didn't know it's 999 [in Britain] not 911 [as in America]. I was so racked with grief."
She recalled surviving the night and channeling her emotions into work, ultimately portraying poet Sylvia Plath in the 2003 film Sylvia.
"It kind of saved my life," Paltrow admitted. "It’s really the way that I process things. It’s how I access the darker parts of myself that I don’t like that much and let them come up and out."
"It was such a blessing having to get up every day and have somewhere to go," the Oscar-winning actress continued. "Just having the structure of the day—to get up and go somewhere—allowed me to mine the grief all day long and let it out."
It is worth noting that shortly after her father's death, Paltrow met Coldplay frontman Chris Martin.
The former couple later tied the knot and welcomed two children, Apple and Moses, before separating in 2014 after a decade of marriage.
