Sam Worthington has finally broken his long-held silence on how he landed the lead role in the hugely successful Avatar film franchise as Jam Sully.

In an appearance on the latest episode of the On Film… With Kevin McCarthy podcast, the 49-year-old actor shared insights into his audition for the renowned 2010 film.

"I got this audition, but they wouldn't tell me what the movie was, who the director was. They couldn't tell me anything about it," Worthington said.

He revealed that because most of the details were kept under wraps, the lack of information left him feeling slightly infuriated.

"I was kind of reluctant, a bit peed off about it, and I was already in one of those headspaces," the Fractured actor explained, noting that the added expense of travelling for adudions only worsened his mood.

As a result, Worthington’s frustration shaped his audition in a way that ultimately helped him land the role.

"That attitude kind of translated into the performance. I remember the first line was: 'Are you Jake Sully?' and it was meant to be, 'Yes, ma'am," and I went, "Uh-huh,'" he recalled, adding that he believed he hadn’t secured the role until he finally received the call.

It is worth noting that Sam Worthington recently reprised his role as Jake Sully in Avatar: Fire and Ash, which was released on December 19, 2025.
