Jameela Jamil is hailing the return of the good rom-com in 2026 with People We Meet on Vacation.

At the January 6 Los Angeles premiere of her latest romantic Netflix project, the actress called the movie “the comeback of the good rom-com,” highlighting her love of the genre.

“This film was some of the most fun I’ve ever had at my job. I love everyone involved,” Jamil shared with PEOPLE. “I love the story. I think it’s what we need in the world right now, given how bleak everything is.”

Praising her co-stars, Tom Blyth as Alex and Emily Bader as Poppy, who play the titular characters, Jamil said the duo is the “perfect lovers on-screen.”

“I’m obsessed with them, and I feel as though this is the comeback of the good rom-com,” she asserted. “I love the character I got to play.”

The 39-year-old actress plays Swapna Bakshi‑Highsmith, a key supporting character in the romantic comedy. Swapna is Poppy’s stylish boss and mentor at the fictional R+R magazine, offering guidance and support as Poppy navigates her personal and professional life.

“We all need a Swapna in our lives,” Jamil proclaimed.

Reflecting on the state of rom-coms today, she agreed that she loves the classics.

“But I feel as though a lot of rom-coms [nowadays] sometimes get dumbed down, and that's not what we grew up with,” she said.

People We Meet on Vacation, featuring Tom Blyth, Emily Bader, Jameela Jamil, Sarah Catherine Hook, Lucien Laviscount, Lukas Gage, Alan Ruck, and Molly Shannon, is directed by Brett Haley and streams now on Netflix.
