Mattel boosts doll diversity with first ‘Autistic Barbie’
First ‘Autistic Barbie’ has been launched by Mattel
Multinational toy creating giant Mattel, who is known as the creator of Barbie dolls has launched a new toy to broaden inclusivity.
The American company has launched an Autistic Barbie for the first time.
The launch comes one month after the release of Barbie Doll with Type 1 Diabetes which came with Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) and Insulin Pump.
Now, the release of the autistic barbie broadens the inclusivity hotizon of the brand which enable more children to feel represented and be able to relate to the toys they see on supermarket shelves.
“The doll, designed with guidance from the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, helps to expand what inclusion looks like in the toy aisle and beyond because every child deserves to see themselves in Barbie.”, the Global head of Dolls at Mattel, Jamie Cygielman said.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than one in 100 children is believed to be autistic.
Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition which affects the person’s everyday life by impacting their communication and interpersonal skills.
The features of the new doll include elbow and wrist articulation, enabling her to mimic stimming, hand flapping, and other gestures.
In addition, her eyes are shifted slightly to the side, reflecting the tendency of autistic people to avoid direct eye contact.
