Ira Khan shares her struggle with body image during Germany trip
Ira explained that she had avoided looking at herself in the mirror while growing up
Bollywood actor Aamir Khan’s daughter, Ira Khan, shared her past struggles with body image in a video posted on Instagram.
She posted the video along with the caption,“What I looked like when I thought I was ‘fat’/‘unfit’. And the moment I understood what it felt like to be in a… fight, almost, with your body, weight and sustenance. It’s one of the worst feelings I’ve ever felt.”
She recalled a time when she thought she was fat, which later led to early signs of an eating disorder.
Ira explained that she had avoided looking at herself in the mirror while growing up. “I grew up never looking in the glass because I thought it was vain, so even when I brushed my teeth or when I was in a lift, I would never look in the glass. I would sneak glances and also look down even when no one was watching,” she said.
“Towards the end of 2019, I started to feel unfit, and in my head, I started to think I was fat because to me unfit and fat were the same thing,” Ira explained.
Ira admitted that she cried at the gym and struggled with her diet. “At the end of 2020, I was at a place where I didn’t want to eat anything unless my mum or a doctor said I could. Even if it was home food, I felt bad about eating it,” she said.
To help her recover, Aamir Khan took Ira to Germany for a fasting retreat. “We spent 17 days there. I fasted for 17 days in a controlled environment with doctors to ensure safety. They guided us through walks and exercises in different groups based on fitness,” she said.
Ira recalled how her father supported her during the retreat. “My dad was standing next to me and holding my hand. He said, ‘we just take one step at a time.’ I felt very helpless, but his support helped me,” she added.
She also shared her weight journey between 2020 and 2026. “There were three times where I felt fat or obese. I finally checked my weight last year in June, and it was 84 kgs. It really shook me because the last time I checked, I was 57 kgs,” Ira said.
Ira concluded by encouraging those struggling with weight or body image. “To anyone who struggles with their weight, whether gaining or losing, I believe you. It is painful and very hard if you feel your body isn’t listening to you,” she said.
