Ellen DeGeneres slammed after backing Minneapolis anti-ICE protests
Ellen DeGeneres has come under fire online after voicing support for anti-ICE protesters in Minneapolis.
DeGeneres recently uploaded a video post on her Instagram account saying she was “proud” of peaceful protestors and referred to Minneapolis as the “happiest city in America.”
However, her comments resulted in a widespread backlash on the internet.
Critics accused DeGeneres of talking about US issues after reportedly leaving the country after Donald Trump’s 2024 re-election.
Some told her she no longer had a right to comment. Others claimed the protests were riots not peaceful demonstrations.
One user wrote, “You don’t get a say anymore.”
Another added, “This is what the country voted for.”
However DeGeneres amidst the scrutiny for her views she also seemed to receive support from some. Several followers thanked her for speaking out.
One Minnesotan wrote, “It’s rough here. Thank you.”
Another said, “Peace through unity.”
DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi were spotted in the UK late last year and are believed to be living in the English countryside.
They sold their Montecito home in August 2024.
DeGeneres has been mostly out of the limelight since her show ended in 2022.
