Paris Hilton slams AI deepfakes decades after her infamous video got leaked
Paris Hilton opens up about traumatic experience after the release of her intimate video in 2004
Paris Hilton has recently spoken out against AI deepfake images as she opens up about her traumatic experience after her sex video was leaked in 2004.
The Simple Life alum endorses for the Disrupt Explicit Forged Images and Non-Consensual Edits Act, or DEFIANCE Act, on January 22, claiming one in eight girls experience the harms of deepfake images.
“Too many women are afraid to exist online or sometimes to exist at all, and I know how that feels, because I lived it,” says the 44-year-old on Capitol Hill on Thursday.
Reflecting on her painful moment, Paris recalls when she was 19-year-old, “a private, intimate video of me was shared with the world without my consent”.
“People called it a scandal. It wasn't. It was abuse,” declares the socialite.
During her speech, Paris, who was accompanied by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Laurel Lee (R-Fla.), and surrounded by reporters, reveals that there were “no laws at the time to protect me”.
“There weren't even words for what had been done to me. The internet was still new, and so was the cruelty that came with it,” states the Stars Are Blind singer.
Paris remembers people’s ruthless treatment as they “called me names and laughed at me”.
“These people didn't see me as a young woman who had been exploited. They didn't see the panic that I felt, the humiliation, or the shame. No one asked me what I lost,” points out the media personality.
Meanwhile, Paris shares that this incident helped her understand other girls’ concerns who went through the same issue.
“What I have learned is that when your image is violated, it doesn't disappear; it lives inside you, but so does your power,” she continues.
The reality star adds, “Telling the truth has helped me heal, and I am so proud that today I stand here without shame and I will keep telling the truth to protect every woman, every girl, every survivor, now and for the future.”
