Ajith Kumar’s 'Mankatha' smashes box office on Tamil Nadu re-release
'Mankatha' tops re-release charts in Tamil Nadu, beating Ghilli’s opening record
Ajith Kumar’s Mankatha has made a roaring return at the box office.
The 2011 action thriller opened to an estimated Rs. 3.75 crore in Tamil Nadu on its re-release, marking the biggest opening for a re-released Tamil film.
The movie has now broken the record of Thalapathy Vijay’s Ghilli, which held the record with Rs. 3.50 crore on day one.
Interestingly, the Mankatha achieved it with fewer shows than Ghilli.
Across India, the Mankatha collected around Rs. 4.1 crore on its opening day, almost matching Ghilli’s all India opening of Rs. 4 crore. Ghilli had better collections in Kerala and other regions, but Mankatha is dominating its home state, Tamil Nadu.
Notably, the two films had different ticket rates. Mankatha sold tickets at standard prices, while Ghilli was slightly discounted.
Even then, Ghilli brought in more crowds and holds the record for Tamil cinema’s highest grossing re-release, over Rs. 20 crore.
