Christopher Nolan weighs in on Netflix and Warner Bros deal
‘The Odyssey’ director raises serious concerns about the merger deal as president of DGA
Christopher Nolan is not only busy filming his highly anticipated movie, The Odyssey, but also taking on challenges as a new president of Directors Guild of America.
The movie-maker, who is known for his movies like Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, expresses concerns over Netflix's planned acquisition of Warner Bros. Pictures.
“We have very, very significant concerns about how this is all going to happen,” says Nolan in his first interview as DGA president, per Variety.
The industrious director admits that it’s “a very worrying time for the industry”.
Nolan notes that the “loss of a major studio is a huge blow” for Hollywood.
However, the DGA leader reveals that he has held talks with both Netflix and Paramount over their bid.
“We're interested to hear more about the specifics of how they're going to run these things,” mentions Nolan.
Meanwhile, the movie-maker shares that theatrical releases are not the primary issue, explaining, “There are encouraging noises, but that’s not the same as commitments.”
“The theatrical window becomes a sort of easily graspable symbol of whether Warner Bros. will be run as a theatrical distributor or whether it be folded in as a streamer,” points out Nolan.
Moreover, the DGA leader tells the outlet, “The reality is, the issues on the television side and the streaming side are far more important to our membership.”
