Filmmaker Aditya Dhar’s spy thriller Dhurandhar is finding a second life online, and it is moving even faster than it did in cinemas.
After a record-breaking theatrical run, the film landed on Netflix on January 30. Within a week, it had already pushed past some of the biggest recent hits to become the most-watched post-theatrical Hindi release on the platform.
The numbers are striking. Dhurandhar debuted with 7.6 million views in its opening weekend – the first time any Indian film has crossed the seven-million mark after leaving cinemas. That was enough to beat Animal, Fighter and Pushpa 2: The Rule.
Animal previously held the record with 6.2 million views, while Fighter managed 5.9 million and Pushpa 2 reached 5 million.
According to Netflix’s Tudum data, Dhurandhar has now topped the weekly global Top 10 list of non-English films in seven countries.
The film has clocked up 26.1 million hours of viewing time and is also trending at number one in Pakistan, where its theatrical release was banned.
Starring Ranveer Singh as an Indian spy operating in Lyari, Karachi, the action thriller also features Akshaye Khanna, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt and R Madhavan. It has already earned more than ₹1300 crore worldwide, and its online run suggests the story is far from over.
