Netflix’s upcoming film Ghooskhor Pandat, produced by Neeraj Pandey, has hit a roadblock even before it hits the platform.

The Film Makers Combine has sent a notice to the 52-year-old screen writer and Netflix over the “unauthorised” use of the movie’s title.

Based on the report of Hindustan Times, the notice read, "It has come to our notice that a film titled ‘Ghooskhor Pandat’ produced by you under your banner is being released on Netflix OTT shortly."

Furthermore, the document mentioned, "As per our official records, you have not applied for the title. As per the rules and regulations of Film Makers Combine, unauthorised titles cannot be used. Kindly respond at the earliest to avoid any disciplinary action.”

Meanwhile, the copy of the official notice was also shared with Netflix.

The organisation claims that the acclaimed film director, a registered member of the Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association (IMPPA), didn’t follow the rules for title approval.

Social media has also chimed in, with many questioning the choice of the word “pandat” usually linked to a religious scholar being paired with “ghooskhor,” which means bribe taker.

However, the critics say the combination gives the film a religious undertone.

Adding fuel to the fire, the Mumbai lawyer Ashutosh Dubey reportedly sent a separate legal notice to Netflix and the film’s producers, calling the title “defamatory” and “an attack on the dignity of the pandit community.”

Notably, Manoj Bajpayee featured as Ajay Dikshit, a dishonest police officer called “Pandat,” in the soon to be released movie, which also stars Nushrat Bharuccha and Saqib Saleem.

It is pertinent to mention, in response to the backlash, the makers have reportedly begun taking down promotional materials.
