Ratna Pathak, Naseeruddin Shah reveal why acting at NSD was more about experience than training
Naseeruddin Shah and his wife Ratna Pathak Shah recently opened up about their time at the National School of Drama (NSD).
During their latest chat, the veteran couple, who both are graduates of the prestigious institute, candidly revealed that they didn’t learn much about acting there.
Speaking to Curtain Call With Aahana Kumra, the 75-year-old actor stated, “There was no acting teacher worth the name when I was at NSD.”
He went on to add, while he learned discipline from one teacher, the craft of acting itself wasn’t taught. “Apart from gaining experience over several plays, I didn’t learn anything about acting at NSD,” he said.
To which the 68-year-old acclaimed television actress agreed and noted, “It was the same when I joined, seven years later. They still hadn’t figured out a good acting teacher.”
The Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro star added, “They still haven’t.”
Moreover, he explained why he goes back to NSD to teach students, saying, “I only go back to help them because only failures come back to teach. And working with students has actually taught me more about acting than I’ve learned in 30-40 years of my career.”
On the professional front, Naseeruddin will be seen in Taapsee Pannu's starrer Assi, releasing in theaters on February 20, and Made in India – A Titan Story (2026), a biopic web series with Jim Sarbh, which will reportedly hit theaters on February, 25.
