Vishal Dadlani warns aspiring singers who use political pressure to reach him
Singer-composer Vishal Dadlani has strongly criticized the 'sifaarsh' culture and expressed his anger over it, stirring a familiar but uncomfortable debate in India’s music industry.
In a blunt Instagram post on Monday, February 9, the Indian Idol judge took aim at what he called the culture of “sifaarish”, where aspiring artists lean on political or personal connections instead of talent.
The 52-year-old wrote, “Some advice for newbie singers. Don’t get some mantri-ji or his secretary to call me. That is a guaranteed way to NEVER meet me. I have zero respect for people who try to make their way forward through ‘contacts’."
He added, "To the chap who just tried it, mantri-ji is now blocked, and so are you. Even if you’re a great singer, I have no interest in working with you."
His post suggested a clear line: opportunity should come from ability, not influence.
He did not name the politician involved, but the post quickly gained traction online, with many praising his refusal to bend. Others questioned whether talent alone can survive in an industry long accused of favouritism.
Known for speaking his mind, the Chammak Challo singer has previously used social media to raise civic issues too, including concerns about fading voting ink after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections.
Despite the controversy, his career remains busy. Alongside Indian Idol Season 16, he continues to release new music across languages.
