Why did Netflix cancel sci-fi anime series 'Terminator Zero' after first season?
Fans of 'Terminator Zero' disappointed as creator confirms cancellation
Netflix has quietly cancelled its sci-fi anime series Terminator Zero after just one season with creator Mattson Tomlin confirming the decision on social media.
Responding to a fan on X about the future of the show Tomlin wrote bluntly: “It was cancelled.”
He explained that despite strong critical reviews and positive audience reception the series did not attract enough viewers to justify continuation.
“The critical and audience reception to it was tremendous, but at the end of the day not nearly enough people watched it,” Tomlin said.
“I would’ve loved to deliver on the Future War I had planned in seasons 2 and 3, but I’m also very happy with how it feels contained as is,” he added.
Tomlin revealed he had already written all of season two and outlined much of season three.
He had envisioned a five-season arc for the show and said he may one day share those plans publicly.
“Maybe someday I’ll do a big thread about the plans I had for the full five season run,” he added.
“The series finale was special and it was part of my pitch to get the job.”
Despite the cancellation Tomlin said he holds no resentment toward Netflix.
He described the streamer as “good partners” who gave him significant creative freedom.
According to Tomlin Netflix even offered him the opportunity to produce an additional two or three episodes to wrap up the story more definitively.
“I felt the story I wanted to tell was much longer, and the finale of season one actually left things in a good place,” he wrote. “But they didn’t have to offer that. Good partners here.”
The cancellation comes as Netflix rolls out its February slate of new releases including returning hit series original dramas and several high-profile documentaries.
But for fans of Terminator Zero the Future War storyline Tomlin had planned will for now remain untold.
