Shrove Tuesday 2026 explained: Why Christians celebrate before Lent begins

Shrove Tuesday 2026 which is also referred to as Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday is being celebrated around the world today on February 17th.

The term “Mardi Gras” comes from the French meaning “Fat Tuesday” a reference to the tradition of using up rich foods before the 40-day fasting period leading to Easter.

A Day Rooted in Repentance

Historically Shrove Tuesday was less about food and parades and more about preparation.

In medieval Europe church bells would ring to call people to confession before Lent. The idea was spiritual cleansing before a season of reflection and sacrifice.

Over time different activities were merged into this celebration to make it more lively. Families would cook pancakes to use up eggs and dairy products that would not be consumed during Lent.

The evolution of Shrove Tuesday

In Catholic regions particularly in France, Italy and later Louisiana in the United States, Mardi Gras evolved into a carnival season filled with music, masked balls and street parades.

The carnival period actually begins on Epiphany (January 6) and builds up to Fat Tuesday.

Mask-wearing allowed people to cross social boundaries temporarily a tradition that continues in cities such as Venice and New Orleans.

In New Orleans Mardi Gras has been celebrated since the 18th century after French settlers brought the tradition to Louisiana.

Today it is known for elaborate floats, krewes (social organisations that organise parades) and the throwing of beads.

The city’s official colours purple for justice, green for faith and gold for power were established in 1872.

A Global Celebration

In Brazil Carnival in Rio de Janeiro features samba parades and elaborate costumes.

In Italy, Venice is known for its ornate masks. In parts of Germany the carnival season known as Karneval or Fasching includes political satire and street festivals.

Each version shares the same calendar anchor: the day before Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of Lent.

Belief and Symbolism

For many Christians Shrove Tuesday remains a solemn reminder of repentance before Lent.

In places like New Orleans it has become a defining part of local identity and tourism generating significant economic activity each year.

Despite its festive image the roots of Mardi Gras remain tied to the rhythm of the Christian liturgical calendar a final day of indulgence before a season traditionally devoted to restraint.
