Former South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol has been handed life sentence.
The former leader was previously ousted in a unanimous 8–0 decision on April 4, 2025.
He has been handed the punishment over his failed 2024 martial law bid.
His reaction was plain as he did not show any signs of emotions when he was handed the sentence.
Yoon Suk was found guilty of rebellion and abuse of authority over his failed attempt to impose martial rule in the country.
His sentence has been followed by his former prime minister, Han Duck Soo, who was sentenced to 23 years of imprisonment last month. The court has ruled it as an “insurrection from the top.”
That sentence was eight years more than the 15 years prosecutors had initially asked for.
Han was found guilty of abetting Yoon’s martial law attempt becoming the first cabinet member under Yoon’s presidency to be convicted over the 2024 coup attempt.
Yoon defended his attempt by claiming that it was nothing more than an innocent gesture aimed at spotlighting the opposition party’s corruptions.
