The chess world is bracing for a digital explosion as Netflix officially confirms the release of its latest documentary, “Untold: Chess Mates,” set to premiere on April 7, 2026.
This highly anticipated installment of the “Untold” series dives deep into the infamous 2022 cheating scandal between World No.1 Magnus Carlsen and American Grandmaster Hans Niemann.
The film explores the fallout from Niemann’s “epic, controversy-shrouded victory over Carlsen at the 2022 Sinquefield Cup,” an event that sparked global headlines and a $100 million lawsuit.
According to the official synopsis, the documentary tracks how Niemann “fights his way back to the top of the chess world, setting the stage for a high-stakes rematch with Carlsen in 2024.”
Niemann, never one to shy away from the spotlight, sent social media into a frenzy with a viral announcement. He tweeted, “The truth, reckoning, and revolution is upon us. Netflix April 7th!”
In a follow-up post, he reflected on the isolation he felt during the scandal, stating, “When the world piled on smear campaigns, coordinated attacks, strategic silence: no one stood with me.”
While Carlsen has remained relatively quiet about the film, Netflix promises raw, first-person perspectives on the “PR-created scandal that was designed to destroy a 19-year-old’s life,” as Niemann previously described it.
Fans can expect the official trailer to drop on March 10.
