Brian Bennett 97 vs India: Zimbabwe star hits historic T20 World Cup record
Bennett smashed 97 out of 59 balls against India
In a spectacular display of power-hitting at the T20 World Cup, Zimbabwe’s young sensation Brian Bennett etched his name into the record books.
During a high-stakes Super 8 encounter at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Bennet hammered a fearless 97 not out off 59 balls against the formidable Indian bowling attack.
With this knock, Bennet became only the second batter in history to score over 90 runs in a T20 World Cup match against Men in Blue, joining the legendary Chris Gayle, who smashed 98 against India in 2010.
Despite chasing a massive target of 257, Bennett remained underrated, smashing eight fours and six sixes.
Reflecting on his historic performance and his team’s journey, Bennet told reporters, “We are very grateful, we’ve done a lot of preparation up to this World Cup and thankfully for me, it’s sort of paid off.”
He emphasised his mental approach during the innings, adding, “I just try to go through my daily processes, just when I am out there, just sort of have a clear mind, clear head and not think too much.”
While India secured a 72-run victory to move closer to the semifinals, Bennett’s “lone warrior” effort earned him a standing ovation. He finished the match as the highest individual scorer for Zimbabwe in tournament history, proving that the rising stars of cricket are ready to challenge the world’s best.
