Suryakumar's million-dollar reaction came after Abhishek scored fifty
In a heartwarming display of leadership during the 2026 T20 World Cup, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav’s unwavering faith in young opener Abhishek Sharma has finally paid off.
After a nightmare start to the tournament where Abhishek recorded three consecutive ducks against the USA, Pakistan, and the Netherlands, the left-hander found his “redemption” in a high-stakes Super 8 clash against Zimbabwe in Chennai.
Facing immense pressure from critics, Suryakumar had earlier shut down the noise during a press conference, famously stating, “Abhishek Sharma ki form ki jo chinta kar rahe hain, unki chinta mai kar raha hu (I am worried for those who are worried about Abhishek Sharma’s form).”
He reminded everyone of the youngster’s previous match-winning performances, adding, “He covered for us all year, now it’s our turn to cover for him.”
The captain’s “million-dollar reaction” came on Thursday when Abhishek finally broke his slump with a blistering 55 off 26 balls. As the opener smashed his way back to form, cameras captured a beaming Suryakumar in the dugout, celebrating every boundary with pure joy.
Suryakumar later emphasised the importance of the team’s identity, saying, “The team’s requirement is that he plays with his identity; if it comes off, good; if not, we are all there to cover it.”
This victory keeps India’s semi-final hopes alive as they head into a virtual knockout against the West Indies.
