WGA event cancelled amidst staff union strike
The Writers Guild of America West Awards have been cancelled in downtown L.A. due to the staff union's strike.
Addressing the awards presenters and participants on Sunday morning, March 1, WGA West president Michele Mulroney wrote a letter to announce the cancellation.
“I am writing to share the news that the 2026 Writers Guild Awards Los Angeles ceremony will be cancelled. An alternative celebration for this year’s Los Angeles-based nominees will be scheduled at a later date,” Mulroney wrote.
The Writers Guild of America East will proceed with its awards ceremony in New York on March 8, ensuring winners are formally honoured. However, the Los Angeles event, originally scheduled at the JW Marriott, has been called off.
The Writers Guild Staff Union began striking on February 17, alleging that management failed to negotiate in good faith. Representing roughly 110 employees, the union is pushing for improved pay and “just cause” safeguards in disciplinary matters. After organising last April, members have maintained daily pickets outside WGA headquarters at Fairfax Avenue and 3rd Street.
In a statement shared on Instagram on Tuesday, the WGSU claimed management warned the awards show would be cancelled if staff declined the latest proposal by Friday.
“Make no mistake: This is an attempt by WGAW management to drive a wedge between union staff and WGA membership when we should be building unity ahead of (studio negotiations),” the staff union said.
