In a moment that has instantly become the defining image of India's T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, captain Suryakumar Yadav doffed his cap and bowed in respect to Sanju Samson at the Eden Gardens.
The heartfelt gesture followed Samson's breathtaking, unbeaten 97 off 50 balls which propelled India to a five-wicket victory over the West Indies and secured their spot in the semifinals.
Chasing a daunting 196 in a "do-or-die" virtual quarterfinal, India stumbled early before Samson took total control. The Kerala batter smashed 12 fours and 4 sixes, finishing the game with a boundary to trigger wild celebrations.
As a weary but triumphant Samson walked back to the dugout, Suryakumar met him on the boundary ropes with a deep bow, a tribute to a teammate who has often faced the brunt of inconsistent selection.
Speaking to the post-match presentation, Suryakumar was visibly emotional about his friend's redemption. "I always say, good things happen to good people who wait, who have a lot of patience," the skipper remarked.
He highlighted the quiet grind Samson underwent while sidelined, adding, "It's all his hard work, what he's been doing behind the doors when he was not playing and he's got the fruit of it at the perfect stage."
India now heads to Mumbai to face England in the semifinal this Thursday, carrying the momentum of their highest-ever successful run-chase in tournament history.
