Iran-US War 2026: Will Iran withdraw from FIFA World Cup? Latest updates
If Iran withdraws, the UAE could be named as potential replacement
The participation of the Iranian national football team in the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 is facing a major crisis following the sudden escalation of military conflict between Iran and the United States.
On March 1, 2026, the President of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, expressed grave uncertainty about the team's future in the tournament, which is set to be co-hosted by the U.S. this June.
Speaking on Iranian public television, Taj admitted that the current climate makes it nearly impossible to focus on sports. He stated:
"With what happened today and with that attack by the United States, it is unlikely that we can look forward to the World Cup, but the sports chiefs are the ones who must decide on that."
The tension follows a series of U.S. and Israel airstrikes within Iran, which have reportedly targeted senior leadership and military infrastructure. In response, Iran has suspended its domestic football league.
The national team, known as Team Melli, was scheduled to play all three of its group-stage matches on American soil, including a high-profile opener against New Zealand in Los Angeles.
FIFA is currently monitoring the situation with caution. General Secretary Mattias Grafstorm remarked, "It is premature to comment in detail, but we will monitor developments around all issues around the world.
He added that FIFA's goal remains a safe environment, saying, "Our focus is on a safe World Cup with all the teams participating."
If Iran withdraws, reports suggest the United Arab Emirates could be named as a potential replacement.
