Eric Dane's cause of death has been publicly confirmed as respiratory failure.

The Grey’s Anatomy star died on Thursday, February 19, and as per his death certificate obtained by PEOPLE, the underlying cause of death is Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Dane first talked about his ALS in April 2025. He told PEOPLE at that time that he is grateful to have his family by his side while they “navigate this next chapter."

“I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week,” he added. “I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”

The Euphoria actor was 53 when he passed away. He is survived by his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie Beatrice, 15, and Georgia Geraldine, 13.

His family confirmed that the actor died on Thursday, February 19, almost a year after he publicly revealed his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS is a progressive neurological condition that damages nerve cells and gradually leads to muscle paralysis, according to the Mayo Clinic. While there is currently no cure, certain medications and physical therapies can help slow the disease’s progression.

"With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS," Dane's family said in a statement on Feb. 19. "He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

The statement further noted that throughout his battle with ALS, Eric had become a dedicated advocate for raising awareness and supporting research, determined to help others facing the same diagnosis. It added that he would be profoundly missed and forever cherished in memory.

The message also said that Eric deeply valued his fans and remained sincerely grateful for the overwhelming love and support he received. His family, the statement concluded, has requested privacy as they navigate this extremely difficult period.
