Baggy kit controversy: Indian football team’s AFC Asian Cup prep derailed
The players sent a collective letter to the AIFF
The Indian women’s football team has been hit by a major “kit fiasco” just days before their AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 opener in Perth.
The squad was forced to scramble for local replacements after the All India Football Federation (AIFF) sent jerseys that were far too small.
Reports reveal that the kits, which arrived only two days before the match against Vietnam, were manufactured for “Under-15 or smaller athletes” and did not fit at least %80 of the 26-member squad.
This blunder left the “Blue Tigresses” without professional attire for their official photoshoot and equipment checks.
Furious at the mismanagement, the players – led by captain Sweety Devi and star Manisha Kalyan – sent a collective letter to the AIFF. They stated that:
“Representing India on the international stage requires professional standards, including properly fitted and appropriate match and training apparel.”
The players also noted that the situation “further affected morale and disrupted our focus in the final days leading up to the match.”
To fix the mess, the AIFF hurriedly sourced 55 jerseys from a local Italian supplier in Perth. A senior official confirmed that “the kit will be available a day before the game” and that they have now made “immediate provision of correct-size match and training kits.”
Despite the chaos, the team maintains they “remain fully committed to representing our country with pride.”
