What role did Ryan Gosling’s daughters play in ‘Project Hail Mary'
Ryan Gosling shares how his kids helped him while filming his new sci-fi project
Ryan Gosling has revealed the special role his daughters played while he was filming his upcoming movie Project Hail Mary.
During a chat with PEOPLE about the film, the 45-year-old actor shared that his daughters, Esmeralda Amada and Amada Lee, whom he shares with his wife Eva Mendes, helped him create alien voices during filming.
The girls stepped in so Gosling had someone to react to when his CGI alien co-star Rocky, originally voiced by James Ortiz, was not present on set.
The sci-fi film follows a science teacher, played by Gosling, who is sent to space to save humankind. During the mission, he encounters an alien named Rocky who is on a similar quest.
"Sometimes when I was working and I needed to switch things up, my kids would come in and I had an earpiece in my ear and they would talk for Rocky so I could talk to them as Rocky," the La La Land star explained.
He added, "There are moments in the movie where I’m laughing or just so charmed by him, and it’s actually my kids talking to me and helping me out."
"They’ve seen many cuts of this film. They’ve given me many notes," Gosling noted while reflecting on their involvement in the project.
He further recalled a moment from pre-production that stuck with him.
"When I was trying on things for the character, my daughter came by and said, 'You look smart in glasses,'" the Barbie star shared with a laugh. "I thought, 'I need to look smart in this, so thank you for that.'"
In a separate interview with Access Hollywood last month, Gosling admitted that his daughters played a pivotal role in convincing him to take on the project.
"My kids have seen multiple cuts. They give me multiple notes. They’re basically the only critics I care about, and they are very critical and very honest," he said. "I made this for them, essentially. As a family, we’d love a movie like this that we could watch together. I just feel really honoured that I got to make one."
When will Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary be released?
Project Hail Mary, starring Gosling and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, is set to hit theatres on March 20, 2026.
