Demi Lovato exposes harsh reality of child stardom
Demi Lovato has recently opened up on dealing with constant comparison in her early Disney years.
The actress, who uses she/they pronouns, mentioned that she and Disney Channel peers Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez dominated teen entertainment during 2000s.
During an appearance on Baby, This is Keke Palmer podcast, Demi responded to a question about the network “always pitting” the young stars against each other at the time.
The actress-singer, who joined the Channel in 2007 with As the Bell Rings, noted that people often assumed competition among the stars even if friendship existed behind the scenes.
Here We Go Again crooner admitted that it was “challenging” to cope with comparisons to Miley and Selena.
“You naturally have insecurities at a young age,” said the 33-year-old.
Therefore, Demi noted that stars “started comparing” themselves to other people.
However, the Chance alum revealed that her mother raised her well and she even shared her thoughtful words with Keke.
“There’s room for everyone. It’s not a competition,” she told the host.
The Don't Forget singer pointed out that her mother’s wise words “really stuck” with her.
“That’s what kind of got me through that period. I was always rooting for everybody,” stated Demi.
Elsewhere in the interview, the Disney star also talked about the harsh reality of fame especially at a young age.
Demi explained that these child stars face intense media scrutiny that causes a negative effect on their mental health.
Meanwhile, the actress would “always be grateful for the friendship” she had and continue to have with the Only Murders in the Building star.
