The college football world is in mourning following the death of Lou Holtz, the legendary coach who restored the glory of Notre Dame football.
Holtz passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at the age of 89. He died in Orlando surrounded by his family after entering hospice care earlier this year.
Holtz is best known for his 11-season tenure at Notre Dame, where he led the Fighting Irish to an undefeated season and a national championship in 1988.
Over a 33-year career, he became the only coach to lead six different programs to bowl games, finishing with 249 career wins.
Beyond his tactical brilliance, he was a beloved broadcaster and motivational speaker known for his quick wit and “newspaper magic trick.”
His family released a statement noting that he will be “remembered for his enduring values of faith, family, service, and an unwavering belief in the potential of others.”
Notre Dame President Rev. Robert A. Dowd added that the school “mourns the loss of Lou Holtz – a teacher, leader and mentor who brought out the very best in his players.”
Throughout his life, Holtz emphasised simple principles for success. He often told his players, “God did not put us on this earth to be average,” and famously taught that “life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond to it.”
