‘SNL’: Colin Jost mocks Timothée Chalamet’s Ballet, Opera controversy

Saturday Night Live takes a jab at Timothée Chalamet’s comment on the contemporary state of opera and ballet, which has faced a lot of backlash.

On Saturday, March 7, the Weekend Update segment’s host, Colin Jost, mentions Chalamet’s comment on opera and ballet, noting his latest movie, Marty Supreme.

“Timothée Chalamet has been criticized by major opera and ballet organizations after he said that no one cares about those art forms,” Jost observed. “Chalamet made the comment on a press tour for his movie about ping-pong.”

Chalamet made the remarks during the February 21 CNN and Variety Town Hall Event, where he appeared alongside Matthew McConaughey to discuss the challenges facing theatrical releases in recent years.

During the conversation, Chalamet said he did not want to work in fields such as ballet or opera simply to keep them alive when, in his view, public interest had faded, while stressing his respect for those working in both art forms.

“And I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera, or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive.’” the Marty Supreme actor said. “Even though it’s like, no one cares about this anymore. All respect to the ballet and opera people out there.”

His comments have since prompted strong reactions from several prominent opera and ballet companies across the United States.
