'Sitaare Zameen Par' heads to OTT year after cinema release
Aamir Khan’s 'Sitaare Zameen Par' set for Sony LIV debut as its first Hindi theatrical premiere
Nearly a year after it first reached cinemas, Sitaare Zameen Par is preparing for a new run, this time on a streaming platform.
The Aamir Khan-led sports comedy-drama, which released in theatres in June 2025, is now set to arrive on Sony LIV.
The move gives the film a second life, bringing its feel-good story into living rooms after its big-screen journey.
The OTT release also carries a small milestone for the platform, because Sitaare Zameen Par will be the first Hindi theatrical film to premiere on Sony LIV, adding a widely watched crowd-pleaser to the service’s growing catalogue.
Interestingly, the 60-year-old initially rejected a traditional OTT deal for this film and instead planned a different digital strategy.
The Dangal actor reportedly turned down offers from major streaming platforms, including a deal worth around ₹120–125 crore, because he believed the usual OTT model, where films appear on streaming just weeks after a theatrical release, harms cinema halls.
Instead, he experimented with a pay-per-view release on YouTube. After the film’s theatrical run, Sitaare Zameen Par was made available on YouTube on 1 August 2025, where viewers could watch it by paying around ₹100 on his channel
Directed by R. S. Prasanna, the film follows Gulshan Arora, a basketball coach whose life changes after a drunk-driving incident leads to community service.
As part of his punishment, he is asked to train a team of neurodivergent players for a basketball tournament.
What begins as an unwanted task slowly becomes something else. As Gulshan spends time with the team, he begins to see their resilience and their unusual but powerful way of looking at the world.
In the end, the coach realises the players he was meant to guide have become his greatest teachers.
The film stars Aamir Khan, Genelia Deshmukh and a young ensemble cast, and was produced under Aamir Khan Productions.
