James Cameron has teased fans about the future of his highly successful Avatar franchise.

In a conversation with Screen Rant during the Saturn Awards, the 71-year-old Canadian filmmaker addressed speculation surrounding the continuation of the blockbuster series.

Cameron, who previously said the franchise would only expand if it performed well at the box office, hinted that a fourth installment could move forward after Avatar: Fire and Ash earned over $1 billion worldwide.

He also revealed that he is paying close attention to “audience feedback” before deciding how the franchise should evolve.

The Titanic director’s earlier comments about the struggling film industry had raised concerns that his long-term plans for the Avatar universe could be at risk.

“Here's the thing: the movie industry is depressed right now. Avatar 3 cost a lot of money,” he told TVBS News. “We have to do well in order to continue. We have to do well, and we need to figure out how to make Avatar movies more inexpensively in order to continue.”

Despite its success, Avatar: Fire and Ash reportedly earned around $870 million less than its predecessor, Avatar: The Way of Water.

What’s next for the Avatar franchise?

Amid the uncertainty, the Avatar franchise still appears likely to continue, with two additional films planned for 2029 and 2031 under Disney’s earlier commitments, though the studio is not contractually obligated to produce them.
