New CBFC rule: All films must include subtitles and audio descriptions
The Central Board of Film Certification has established mandatory subtitle requirements for all films which will promote inclusivity in the moviewatching experience.
The CBFC’s directive will come into effect from March 15, 2026. All Indian films must now include subtitles together with audio descriptions for all applicable content.
The move will enhance access to films for people who have hearing or visual disabilities by providing them a complete viewing experience that does not depend on their language skills or their physical abilities.
The CBFC's decision to require subtitles has created dissatisfaction among certain internet users.
The social media platforms have become a base for users to express their discontent because they believe that subtitles disrupt the authentic experience of watching movies.
