Maya Hawke, Lewis Pullman Share acting Lessons from famous parents
Maya Hawke and Lewis Pullman’s famous parents have set an example for them as actors and shown them how to embrace "grace and gratitude” in Hollywood.
The two actors, who star in the upcoming romantic comedy, Wishful Thinking, appeared at the SXSW Film & TV Festival on Thursday, March 12.
Speaking to PEOPLE, Maya and Lewis reflected on the career advice they have gotten from their famous parents and how they have helped them in their on-screen career endeavours.
Lewis, the son of actor Bill Pullman and dancer Tamara Hurwitz, made his debut in Hollywood when he appeared alongside his father in the 2017 film The Ballad of Lefty Brown.
Looking back, Lewis said he has always respected his father’s calm approach to the profession and the way he keeps his work and private life separate.
“My dad leads through example. He doesn't really force feed mantras down my throat, which I think has been very helpful,” Lewis said, noting that the guidance he has received from Bill over the years has been “priceless.”
Maya, meanwhile, said growing up with actors Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman gave her a clear understanding of what it means to live under public scrutiny.
She explained that her parents encouraged her to approach fame with “grace and gratitude,” even when the attention that comes with it can feel overwhelming.
According to Maya, success in the entertainment industry can sometimes “turn so sour,” largely because fame often comes at the expense of privacy.
“I’m really grateful for the ways my parents showed me that the price to your humanity, of avoiding interacting with the world, is a more expensive price than the price of taking a picture with someone on the street,” she said.
Wishful Thinking is now playing in theatres.
