Selena Gomez has opened up about the brutally honest reality of her mental health following her bipolar disorder diagnosis six years ago.

During a recent episode of her husband Benny Blanco’s Friends Keep Secrets podcast, the 33-year-old pop star and actress shared details about her journey leading up to her diagnosis.

When asked by Blanco whether she had noticed symptoms of bipolar disorder prior to being officially diagnosed, Gomez admitted she initially struggled to understand what was happening.

"I knew something was wrong, but I think I was misdiagnosed.I think people were just assuming – and I would try multiple therapists." the Only Murders in the Building star said.

She continued, "It’s actually really hard when we’re talking about these things, and for me to go, ‘Go get a therapist.’ All of it is so … complicated."

Gomez recalled speaking to several professionals before receiving her diagnosis, urging others not to give up.

"I’m so grateful I went to four different rehabs because it all helped me understand it," she shared.

Joining the conversation, Blanco revealed that his wife sometimes experiences manic episodes without even realising it.

"She’ll start to realize she’s having it after it’s happening, and sometimes she doesn’t even remember when it’s happening," he added. "It’s such a delicate thing because … you’re not supposed to, technically, talk to the person about it while they’re deep in it."

Furthermore, Gomez went on to praise Blanco, underscoring the importance of having a partner who understands bipolar disorder.

"It is helpful to have a partner who will understand … and meet you where you are," she remarked.

Ending on a hopeful note, the Rare songstress shared that she now lives more "freely," reminding others not to be defined by a diagnosis.
