Cameron Diaz is set to headline a sequel to Troop Beverly Hills, with the project currently in development at TriStar Pictures.

Filmmaker Clea DuVall will direct from her own script for the cult 1989 comedy, marking a reunion with the studio following her work on the critically acclaimed rom-com Happiest Season.

Plot details for the sequel remain tightly under wraps.

Production duties will be handled by Laurence Mark, alongside Diaz and her business partner Katherine Power, with whom she co-founded the organic wine brand Avaline.

The project also signals Diaz’s renewed collaboration with Sony, the studio behind some of her biggest commercial hits, including Charlie’s Angels, The Holiday, and Bad Teacher, all of which performed strongly at the global box office.

The original Troop Beverly Hills, released by Columbia Pictures in 1989, was inspired by the real-life experiences of writer-producer Ava Fries. The film starred Shelley Long as a wealthy Beverly Hills socialite who takes on the challenge of leading a Wilderness Girls troop to prove her resilience to her daughter.

Further casting and release details are yet to be announced.
