Theatre and television actor Michael Campbell has died aged 35 following a battle with motor neurone disease.

The Belfast-born performer, also known as Michael Patrick, was diagnosed in February 2023 and passed away on Tuesday, April 7, at Northern Ireland Hospice, where he had been receiving care for the past ten days.

His wife, Naomi, confirmed the news, sharing that he died peacefully surrounded by loved ones.

In a heartfelt tribute, she wrote, “Words can't describe how broken-hearted we are,” describing him as “an inspiration” whose life was filled with “joy” and “infectious laughter.”

Campbell built a diverse career across stage and screen, with appearances in series including Blue Lights, Game of Thrones, Soft Border Patrol, and My Left Nut

However, it was his theatre work that earned widespread acclaim.

He received particular recognition for his portrayal of Richard III in a wheelchair, a performance that won the Judges’ Award at the Stage Awards in January 2025.

Trained at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts after studying science at the University of Cambridge, Campbell was widely regarded as a committed and inspiring presence in the industry.

He is survived by his wife and family.
